Writing Courses

If you're thinking about going to Edinburgh Festival in the Summer, why not give yourself a creative tune-up?

Logan Murray teaches and directs successful comedy writing courses, in London. They tend to happen four or five times a year.

Comedians and actors can work in a supportive yet critical environment on any sketch, sit-com or character pieces they have in mind. The course is designed to encourage and improve writing (sketch or stand-up) skills, and Logan's directing is invaluable in brushing up the finished product.

Places are limited to ensure that everyone gets a fair crack of the whip.

Subjects covered include: basic comedy grammar (afterthought, the comedian's attitude, the 'drop', the 'twist', the 'rug pull', etc); list comedy; ranting; parody; topical gags; how to cut dead wood; extreme characters; Freudian and Bergsonian theories of comedy.

Each of the five sessions are generally themed as follows:

Session 1: Joke Formulas and Set structures
Session 2: Mind Maps, creating lists and mining subjects
Session 3: Long form and short form of 'afterthoughting' material
Session 4: Breaking down thoughts to gag them up
Session 5: The Rant and looking at idioms and malaprop/misunderstanding gags

The rest of each session will be spent with road testing some writing games at the top of the class (mine, Tony Allen's, Gene Perret's and Huw Thomas's). And, of course, looking at the material everyone's come up with during the week.
